Refreshing the Mattress

At Steemer of South Florida our main mission to create healthier homes and businesses through the wonders of cleaning. In order to achieve that mission, we want to help create habits that go beyond your ordinary room cleaning and that really work to drive contaminates and dirt out of your home and bring back the freshness. We’ve stressed the importance of keeping your bedrooms clean before and have provided tips to assist you in the clean-up, but now we want to tackle the biggest issue with bedroom cleanliness: the bed.

Mattresses can be a breeding ground for contaminates if they aren’t properly cared for. That’s why ensuring that you’re cleaning your mattress on a regular basis is important, especially if you are susceptible to asthma or allergies. Mattresses usually contain the highest number of allergens and contaminates in your bedroom, such as dust mites, skin cells, bacteria, viruses, and even possible mold growth. Take it from us, a clean bed is better for your health, and studies have shown it promotes a better night’s sleep too, so it’s a win-win.

To achieve a clean mattress, have these supplies on hand:

  • Baking Soda (16oz)
  • HEPA filtered vacuum (HEPA Filters trap even the smallest particles)
  • Essential Oils

To begin, the first step to cleaning the mattress doesn’t involve any actual cleaning. Manufacturers usually recommend that your mattress should be rotated every 6 months in order to extend mattress life and to reduce any potential dents and sagging. Since your moving the bed around, now is a perfect time to gather all the bedding such as pillow cases, sheets, duvets, and comforters and toss them in the washer.

Now that the bed is rotated and stripped, it’s time to deodorize and decontaminate. With your baking soda in hand add a dozen or so drops of your favorite essential oils into the box and shake it up. The infusion of the essential oils mixed with the baking soda will not only deodorize and clean, but the oils will create a fresh scent that also is naturally anti-bacterial.

With the baking soda now infused with the essential oils, begin to sprinkle the entire box evenly dispersed on the mattress. Once you’re done, thoroughly massage the baking soda into the bed and allow at least one hour for the baking soda and oils to work their rejuvenation magic.

While you’re waiting, now’s the perfect moment to clean up under the bed frame and around your sleeping area, such as night stands or anything else you feel could use a little refresher. After about an hour, vacuum up all the baking soda. Vacuuming not only absorbs the baking soda but also any additional contaminates lingering, such as those pesky dust mites.

With your bed all spruced up and disinfected, you’ll not only be sleeping in a healthier environment, you’ll be sleeping better! Don’t stop there, getting your home in its best shape is a continuous effort that. Check out the rest of our blog to find more insight and tips to make 2019 your cleanest year yet! And as always, for the most professional clean possible give the team at Steemer of South Florida.
