DIY: Carpet Stains and How to Remove Them

The holidays are over – we made it! That said, the winter months can be tough on both your wallet and your home. The increased foot traffic allows for more dirt and grime to infiltrate your home as well as the occasional spill and subsequent stain. Post-holiday clean-up doesn’t have to create a headache. With the help of Steemer of South Florida, we can make cleaning simple.

Today, we’re covering the best ways to clean the carpets on your own with a few simple DIY tricks!

Red Wine:

If the stain is fresh, blot out as much as you can with a dry, neutral colored cloth. Sprinkle baking soda and loosen or “agitate” the area of carpet that you’re treating with a spoon or relatable object by grazing through the carpet like a comb. Afterwards, vacuum up the remaining baking soda and repeat the step if necessary. Next, mix two cups of water and a tablespoon of dish soap, re-agitate the area and let the liquid soak for 1-2 minutes. Again, blot the area and then flush it with water when you’re done. The last step is to blot out or soak up the water before finishing with a spray of hydrogen peroxide.

Soda:

While not as tough to get out as red wine, soda still needs to be treated and taken care of properly and promptly to alleviate the damage it does to your soft carpets. The first step is to blot out any excess liquid from the area with a neutral colored cloth until it’s as dry as possible. Mix one tablespoon of dish soap with one tablespoon of vinegar and two cups of water into a spray bottle, spray the affected area and blot it out until the stain is gone, repeating as many times as you need to.

Food Grease:

One of the best go-to DIY ingredients, ammonia, can react adversely to natural or nylon fabrics so be sure to test it out on a small hidden spot to ensure it works before removing grease stains from your furniture or carpet. If all is good, start by spreading baking soda on the affected area. You will start to see the baking soda clump up and change color as the grease is absorbed. Next, mix 12 ounces of water with 3 ounces of ammonia in a spray bottle and treat the area. Be sure to use a clean, dry cloth when blotting up the liquid afterwards. Repeat this step until the spot is removed. Flush the area with cold water, and then finish off the job by mixing 4 ounces of vinegar with 12 more ounces of water and treating the now spot free area. After blotting up as much liquid as possible, allow the area to dry and you are good to go!
