5 Cleaning Tips for Allergy Season

Many people are aware that one of the most common household allergens is dust. If you don’t suffer from allergies or asthma, this is something that probably doesn’t worry you too much until you have guests over. However, if you suffer from allergies or asthma, these tiny little irritants can be anything but. Other allergens that are lurking around your home and triggering symptoms include mold, pollen and animal dander. Knowing which areas of your home to clean and how to properly clean them can help reduce or alleviate annoying symptoms, such as runny nose, coughing, sneezing and watery and itchy eyes. Check out our cleaning tips for allergies and asthma below so you can start enjoying your home.

De-Clutter

When you think about cleaning, you probably think about vacuuming or dusting. However, before doing any of these tasks, you should remove any clutter from your home. Piles of clothing or boxes, for example, are secretly trapping allergens inside of your home that you may not be aware of.

Eliminate Scented Products

Even though those lavender or other scented cleaning products smell nice, they are not so nice on your allergies or asthma. The fragrances in cleaners could be triggering your symptoms, so the next time you purchase cleaning products, opt for the unscented ones.

Dust with Dampness

Going around your house with a standard duster is not all that effective. In fact, you’re probably doing your allergies or asthma worse. Instead, dust with a damp cloth, or better yet, one that is dampened with a disinfectant, as the damp cloth is more likely to pick up the allergens rather than relocate them within your home.

Switch up Your Shades

Drapes and horizontal blinds trap dust mites and other allergens, and are often overlooked when cleaning. This means that the allergens keep accumulating and you probably aren’t aware of it. Instead, change your window accessories to roll-up shades, as these are less likely to retain dust and allergens. Otherwise, make a note to clean your shades or drapes on a regular basis.

Wear a Mask

Possibly the most effective of the cleaning tips for allergies and asthma, is to wear a mask before tackling any cleaning task. While you clean, you stir up allergens, and this can trigger symptoms. Wearing a mask can help to reduce your symptoms while you clean, making it less of an excruciating task!
